Inspire 52 - Week 31. Pop Up Paper

This week, after a lot of cancelling, I finally managed to make it to Portland. These injuries I have had for the last 5 weeks have been making it difficult for me to get around, but I am gradually mending, so I hope there will be no more set backs along the way.

So the Olympics has rocked off to a great start ... apparently as I don't watch tele!! But Weymouth and Portland have been very quiet as there was so much hype about the roads being bad ... so now is in fact the quietest and best time to go to assure yourself a spot on the beach and also great entertainment all for your self!!

Anyway, enough of that and onto this ...

... Pop Up Dorset invited me to install a mini Paper Forest in their Historic Church exhibition, of course I said yes, as I was delighted about taking the forest out of the gallery environment and creating it in new environments, and this was a great place to start.

St George's Church is a Church of England church on the Isle of Portland, built between 1754 and 1766^[2] to replace St. Andrew's which had fallen into disuse and was no longer suitable as a place of worship.^[3] The church was closed in 1914 for many reasons, and fell into further disrepair ever since that time. In the 1960s however, the church fell under the protection of a newly formed group, the 'Friends of St George's Church', who were able to restore the church. Now no longer needed for regular worship, the church is now a redundant church in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.^[4] It was declared redundant on 16 April 1970, and was vested in the Trust on 27 October 1971.^[5]

St George's Church is regarded as one of, if not the, most impressive 18th century church in Dorset.^[1] It is a large church built of Portland stone and has a tower, a nave, transepts, an apse, and a kind of abortive dome over the crossing.^[1] The design is reminiscent of Christopher Wren (particularly the tower, with regards to the clock towers of St Paul's Cathedral).^[1] The windows are arranged in two tiers, all with simple, broad raised frames that lack moulding. Architect John Vanbrugh called the result a "a masculine show".^[1] It is a Grade II listed building.^[6]

Well I think that's pretty interesting stuff!!

This venue has an amazing vibe about it. It is soa beautiful and grey on the cliff top in Portland ... Stunning ...

Inspire 52 - Week 22. Introducing The Holiday Makers

At the end of April, I set out on a birthday trip with my housemate, wearing our newly acquired vintage dresses, for afternoon tea ...

... after some editing and with the onset of Trip 2 having taken place today to celebrate the Jubilee weekend, we have compiled, edited, trimmed and spruced Trip 1. The Wuthering Scone, ready for publishing...

When the weather is rainy on your holiday,

There are plenty of things to do inside.

Like afternoon tea and champagne I must say,

And watching the windy wuthering tide.

On a jolly vacation you don't need the sun,

Its important in England to simply have tea.

Enjoy fine cakes and a belly warming bun,

Keeps you grounded and safe from the sea.

So where are we from and where do we go,

Saucers of languages from far and wide.

Embracing the change with motions in flow,

And tea cups of weather in our stride.

Inspire 52 - Week 18. The Ticket Office

Hello Peeps!

Time is getting on, where is the white rabbit?

I can hardly keep up with myself as we come racing into May. What's ahead is all very exciting and I find myself in a constant state of edginess between utter excitement and wonder at how on earth I am going to pull this all off! I am sure I will, always manage it somehow ... and then I'll sit back on my park bench in The Paper Forest in June with a mini cup of Guiness, absorbed into The Monochronium and ponder black and white thoughts of loveliness as I gaze into the stars ... I guess you'll just have to come to the exhibition to see what I'm on about ... or indeed, I am sure I will be blogging about it too.

So what's going on this week? Well next Monday (Bank Holiday Monday) I will be performing a new performance piece as part of Poole Street Arts Festival - The Ticket Office.

You will be able to come and pick up a ticket and get it stamped in exchange for expressions of your imagination as to what imaginary sport you would like to take part in or see at the Black and White (Monochronium) Olympics. So this week I have been ticketting ... and here it is ...

Sorry I can't stop too long this week ... still got work to do tonight ... but I hope you have enjoyed the poem, are continuing to enjoy the Inspire 52 ride, I certainly am, it keeps me on my toes, may need to buy some pointy ballet shoes soon!

Following the success of Hazel Evans' début solo exhibition, The Monochronium in October 2011, as Lighthouse's first ever Resident Visual Artist, Hazel now takes us further into the experience of her art practice with Adventures Into The Monochronium.

Adventures Into The Monochronium is set to be an extraordinary creative experience that will lead you into a multi sensory voyage into the surreal black and white world of Hazel's Monochronium. You will be able to journey into a Paper Forest, visit the Ink Mountains and experience The Wardrobe Studio where you can obtain a passport to The Kingdom of The Monochronium. You will also be able to watch Hazel and other artists create new works of art in her ever evolving developmental exhibition over six weeks.

Hazel will be featuring collaborations with Illustrator and writer Hayley Potter MA RCA with live explosive art with an entire wall of paper and ink, Silk Weaver Debby Kirby with woven illustrated pictures and artist books, and Musician Timo Peach from Momo Tempo with a soundtrack to accompany the entire exhibition and guide you through the gallery space.

Inspire 52 - Week 10. Brilliance and The Flower Forest

Tuesday 6th March 2012

Wow ... I'm into double figures! Week 10 = just under 20% complete... not that i'm wishing the end of the project to arrive, indeed not .. in fact I am riving in the fact that spring is well on its way and I am determind to capture some beautiful moments this summer so I can't tell you how excited I am at the onset of spring, it's very exciting for me.

This week is pretty full on... Brilliance, the art trail exhibiton in Old Town Poole is happening this weekend and I am taking part with a new illuminated illustrative piece. The images below only show sections of the pieces I have created for the site specific installation I will be exhibitiing in collaboration with New Street Florist. I don't want to give the whole thing away just yet, hence the cropped images, but I will publish the entire images and pictures of the show as an addition to the blog at the end of the week.

Brilliance 2012 is also part of the Twin Sails Bridge, new iconic landmark in Poole, opening this weekend and I shall also be singing in the Olympic Coastal Voices Choir as part of the concert celebrations on Friday 9th March ... It's going to be a great evening ... lalalalaaaaa!

Anyway back to The Flower Forest, which is indeed inspired by flowers! But it's about the magicality of flowers and I have cretaed a concise illustrative story that takes the onlooker into an imaginary world where the flowers are massive and two sisters are on the quest for the perfect flower to give as a gift to their mother ... yes Mother's Day soon too! This piece is aimed to be simply beautiful with a sprinkling of fairy dust ... nothing too deep this week you'll be glad to know!

I will post the full pictures at the end of the week as well as some pictures of the event and feedback on how it went, so until then, have a great rest of week... by the way my favorite flowers are those roses that have a beautifully strong scent that takes you back to ye ol' England. I also love forget-me-knots and all those tiny little wild flowers that just pop up every where in all sort of different places.

Hello and welcome back. Yesterday evening was fantastic. There was a great feeling about the whole event. The Twin Sails bridge openeing was greta and we (the Coastal Voices Olympic Choir) did a great job of our first performance.

It was wonderful watching people enjoying my illuminated illustrative installation. There were light installations in over 20 locations throughout Poole Old Town and on the quay.

My piece consists of three framed hanging illustrations, ink on tracing paper, with back lighting. The picture sequence tells a short story about two sisters who go into the Flower Forest in search of the perfect flower, and like all good fairy tales, it has a happy ending.

The Flower Forest

Into the forest they went ... they searched all day and all night for the perfect flower ... they saw roses, lillies and tulips, every flower you could ever imagine. At night the flowers came alive with pollen glowing bright. It was there in the moonlight, they found the perfect flower, a gift form the heart.
